When we say a “safe car,”
we usually think about protecting vehicle occupants in car crashes.
However, protecting pedestrians (people outside the car) is just as important as protecting those inside.

As a nonprofit organization founded in 1959, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
annually conducts a comprehensive evaluation, assessing crash protection and crash prevention performance of the cars recently launched in the United States (including those with facelift or full model year changes), and announces its selection of the ‘safest cars’ of the year.

It is known as a test agency that carries out the strictest vehicle safety inspections throughout the world.

This year, for the first time,
IIHS has granted the title 2020 ‘Top Safety Pick+’ or ‘Top Safety Pick’ only to the vehicles
that have incorporated a Pedestrian Detection Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) System.

According to a survey conducted by the IIHS,
more than 6,300 pedestrians died from car crashes in 2018.
This figure, which is a record high in 28 years,
shows that improvement of social awareness for pedestrian safety is necessary.

That is why the IIHS says to have included pedestrian-avoidance technology as one of the factors needed for
receiving the highest safety rating ‘Top Safety Pick+.’

This year, 64 vehicles were selected as safe cars, with 23 of them receiving the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award by demonstrating the best safety performance and the rest, 41 of them, receiving the ‘Top Safety Pick’ award by showing a fair performance.



Since many car buyers determine the safety of new cars by using the IIHS ratings,
most automakers aim to receive good scores in this evaluation.

If so, which vehicles have been evaluated as the safest cars in 2020?

was chosen as the safest brand by offering 14 ‘Top Safety Pick+’ / ‘Top Safety Pick’ award-winning vehicles.
